Project 2: Packaging Design (Group Project)

The brief:

Overview
Take the brand and packaging identity you established in Project 2 and bring it to life in the retail world. Your goal is to design a cohesive "merch drop" collection consisting of FIVE (5) distinct items and pitch the concept to the class.

The 5 Required Items
Your collection must include the following:

One (1) POP (Point-of-Purchase) Display: A freestanding or countertop display designed to hold or showcase your product in a retail environment.

Four (4) Merchandise Items: Original branded goods (e.g., apparel, tote bags, tumblers, limited edition collectibles, stationery) that specifically appeal to your target audience.

Phase 1: Research & Concepts
Analyze your Project 2 brand values and packaging aesthetics.
Develop 5 concepts that feel like a natural extension of the brand.
Goal: Ensure the items are things your target audience would actually buy.

Phase 2: Design & Mock-ups
Design the graphics and structural elements for all 5 items.
Create high-quality digital mock-ups. These should be realistic renders that look like professional product photography.
Ensure strict visual consistency (color palette, typography) with your Project 2 packaging.

Phase 3: Strategy & Presentation
Promotional Strategy: Outline specific channels (Social Media, Influencers, Events) and tactics you will use to launch the merchandise.
The Pitch: Prepare a slide deck presentation to "sell" your ideas. You will present your designs and strategy in Week 14*.

2. Process

We started by assigning roles to begin Phase 1. As a group, we had already designed the box and were preparing it for print. Moving forward, our goal is to maintain design consistency and mood across all mockups and assets in this task.

We also consulted with Mr. Shamsul regarding the merchandise Bass Tech should offer to expand our product range. We agreed on the following items:
  1. Hoodie
  2. Headphone stand
  3. Carry pouch
  4. Cable organiser
For our Phase 1 document writeup, I was in charge of writing up the merchandise development part.

Among those 4 extensions, we are to also design a POP Display, which I was in charge of.

It took me a while to find a mockup that fit our product range, but I managed to find one that strongly supports our POP display needs.

From there, I designed it to match our theme: elegant, minimal, youthful, and modern.

Moving on to Phase 3, which is the promotional strategy stage, I was in charge of coming up with four posters: three Instagram brand promo posts and one strong real-life poster placement.

For the posters, I planned for each to convey a different message:
  1. Product hero
  2. Personality-driven
  3. Merch drop
Having distinct angles like this helps build hype directly around the launch product.

As for the impactful poster, I chose to feature the product itself like in Poster #1, but placing it inside a train carriage. Train passengers are stationary for longer periods, giving the poster significantly more viewing time. More importantly, train commuters are usually wearing headphones, reaching our target audience at the exact moment they are thinking about personal audio products.

Once we have all worked on our assigned tasks, we began putting together the final presentation. Fig 2.10 shows our presentation slides, and Fig 2.11 shows our presentation video.

3. Reflection

Working on this task was fun since it served as a necessary extension to the brand that was given. Deciding on items that would fit the brand was also insightful, as we learned what works and what doesn't. The design process went smoothly because we had already established our visual identity and mood back in Task 2. I also found deciding on the three different poster messages really interesting, as they naturally flow into a sequence of actions for the customer. Overall, this was a great exercise in learning how to expand a brand's product range and market it effectively.
